Doing Motion Control Time Lapse Reply with quote

Just a few notes on doing your own motion control time lapse videos, geared for photographers!

Huh? What Is It?

To make it perfectly simple, it is moving time lapse footage! A series of consecutive images are captured while the camera is in motion, be it panning or tilting etc.

How Does It Work?

There are many ways to do this, but by far one of the more simpler and cheaper ways is by using motorized telescope heads, such as the Orion TeleTrack, the DS-2000 or a Celestron 114GT, with the latter being used by the likes of Tom Guilmette and others.

Sample Requirements:

1) Camera
2) Equitoral Mount
3) RA motor
4) Controller
5) Computer

Other Variations:

You could, for example, use a table top equatorial mount with the 1x az motor and a timer. Another option for motion control photography is to use a rotary table setup. Check out this link for buying the hardware courtesy of Mumford Micro Systems, and this link for the Time Machine site.. One final option that has come on the market recently is from The Gadget Works. They are still beta testing, and the system does seem to be quite pricey, but it is worth a look.

The video below is a sample set-up, as shown by Jay. The video goes in great detail of how the system works and the parts needed.

Here is another example of the basic set-up:

Finally, we have the new AutoMate 1.0 system from TheGadgetWorks:

Where To Buy

1) Craigslist/Ebay

Doing a quick local search of Craigslist found me a used Meade telescope package for a decent price.

2) Local Shop

Try your local telescope and photography stores for new heads, or maybe one of the major online stores like B&H. Adorama is also a good place. They are selling this Meade mount.

3) Online Classifieds

You can always find someone getting rid of their gear. Have a look at Astromart, for example. You can also try here.
